At East Green, when speaking to families who are looking to recruit a nanny for the first time, I hear a lot of ‘nanny myths.’ Nanny myths are incorrect ideas that people have about nannies, how they work and the actual work that they’ll do.
Here are four of the most common nanny myths and why I think they’re myth rather than fact. Let me know if you have any other questions!

I was lying in bed the other night and remembering a recent conversation that I’d had with a nanny, who was telling me how lovely her family is and how much she enjoys her job. Those kinds of conversations are great! I started to recall other such conversations I’d had over the many years of running this nanny agency and also some which weren’t quite as positive.
I realised that running through my mind I had a list of nanny likes and dislikes which might be worth sharing with you, the families who employ them or who might be considering a nanny for your childcare, so here goes.

So how would I explain this approach in a nutshell? I say, Steph and Lyndsey have looked back over the years at some of our most wonderful pioneers in childhood studies and have taken all the best parts of their theories and mixed them all together to create The Curiosity Approach.
On the surface it appears to be about aesthetics, beautifully created rooms with neutral tones, curious loose parts* and cosy areas.
But the approach runs much deeper than what appears to be on the surface, it talks to the core of what I believe childhood should be.
Treating children with respect, putting importance in their voices, caring about what their needs are as a whole not just about getting them to write their names and count in row and getting them back in touch with nature and the natural world.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have chosen their son’s name and shared it with the world. It is definitely breaking from tradition when it comes to royal family member names but I’m sure they agonised over it just as much as I did with mine!

I started Googling sleep quotations for this piece and became very distracted! The one that caught my eye, though, was “People who say they sleep like babies, usually don’t have them.” It made me chuckle but, after talking to my friend Alison Humphrey-Walters, infant sleep coach, it made me wonder whether maybe we could all sleep as well as her baby clients.

Happy new year! I know it’s already January 21st but hopefully it’s not too late to be saying that. There’s always a great deal of chat around January about resolutions and what you’re going to achieve in the year which can feel over-whelming to the point of off-putting. But if, as a mother, one of your goals for the year was returning to work then read on as there may be some people who can help.

Having babies abroad – an ex-pat’s experience
Clare White has lived quite literally all over the world. She was born in Kent, moved to Switzerland when she was one, later came back to Kent and then once married, embarked on a worldwide adventure with her husband Roger that would take them to Austria, Trinidad , Mumbai, Egypt, Singapore and Thailand. Clare has three sons who were born in different countries, Egypt, Singapore and Thailand and here she recounted to me some stories of having babies abroad and how she took inspiration from a Thai hospital to start her business.

‘Hypno’ what?? That’s the response I tend to get when talking about hypnobirthing. If I’m honest it’s the ‘hypno’ bit of the word which tends to put people off. Perhaps it’s the images of pocket clocks on gold chains, tie dyed skirts, incense diffusers and chanting which spring to mind for most people, confirming that hypnobirthing is definitely not for them. “A little bit weird and alternative” or “definitely not for me as I am not that type of person” are often quoted.

If you’re the parent of a fussy eater (and most parents I know are, including me) then chances are you’ve tried lots of different ways to get your child to eat different foods.
Maybe you started off quite patiently, being very encouraging and trying a variety of tactics to make mealtimes fun. Several months on though, maybe nothing has worked, you’re anxious your child isn’t getting all the daily nutrients he or she needs, and mealtimes have become a constant battleground, with tears and tantrums and stress.
